1. Explain: Students will be able to demonstrate their knowledge of Westward Expansion.
Glogster- Students will create a Glogster about Westward Expansion period.
2. Students will know how to read primary and secondary texts, and how to put them into words they can understand.
Compare/Contrast- Students will be given excerpts from primary and secondary texts, and asked what the difference is.
2. Interpret: Students will be able to make meaning of primary and secondary texts from the Westward Expansion period.
Blog- Students will blog about the differences between primary and secondary texts
3. Students will know about the Industrial Revolution.
Handout- Students will complete a handout with pictures of things invented during the Industrial Revolution. They will have to say when these items were invented.
3. Apply: Students will be able to invent their own invention.
iMovie- Students will create their own invention, and use iMovie to make a commercial for their new invention.
4. Students will know about Manifest Destiny and the Trail of Tears/treatment of Native Americans.
Ice Cream Cone Graphic Organizer- Students will complete Ice Cream Cone Graphic Organizer to show what they previously know about Manifest Destiny.
4. Perspective: Students will be able to argue for a point.
Debate- Students will have a debate about Manifest Destiny, with one group arguing for it, and the other arguing against it.
5. Students will know what settlers in the Western territories had to do to survive.
Writing prompt- Students will be asked to write about what they think life was like during the 1800's.
5. Empathy: Students will be able to imagine what life was like during the Westward expansion period.
Comic Life- Students will create a comic using Comic Life, documenting the life of a fictional settler.
6. Students will know what breakthroughs in different areas of life occurred during the Westward Expansion era.
Discussion- Students will engage in a discussion about how life in America changed during this period.
6. Self Knowledge: Students will be able to realize how America changed during the Westward Expansion era, and how it impacts their lives.
Podcast- Students will create a podcast discussing how life in America changed forever during this time period.
